Daily teaching conferences are conducted by faculty members and subject matter experts in the morning from 7:45-8:30am. Residents hand off their pagers to the chiefs during the conference. Conferences are scheduled by the chief residents following a curriculum to cover the complete spectrum of pediatrics in an 18 months cycle.
Morning reports follow a weekly format. Monday afternoons are spent in the simulation lab for practical case scenarios, lectures and mock codes, under the supervision of PICU faculty members. Monday mornings are a formal morning report, lead by the Senior Admitting Resident and the Chief Residents. Tuesday and Thursday morning reports are core lectures conducted by senior faculty. Wednesday mornings are reserved for our house staff meeting and includes weekly board review questions. Wednesday noon case presentations are done by senior residents during their General Inpatient, PICU and NICU months. Friday mornings are reserved for grand rounds. There are occasional Friday noon conferences and monthly ethic rounds and tumor boards.
Once a month all residents join our faculty-led journal club to discuss some of the latest and controversial articles in pediatrics. All third year residents are sent to a board review course at the end of their residency paid for by the program.
